Arcana Borealis exhibition at the Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki

ATENEUM ART MUSEUM
From October 23, 2026 to February 28, 2027

The Ateneum in Helsinki brings together women from the North who, like Hilma af Klint, invented abstraction while believing they were painting under the dictation of spirits. There were about fifty of them.

Hilma af Klint called these entities the High Masters, and considered her canvases to be messages before considering them paintings. The Ateneum in Helsinki brings them together for the first time in Arcana Borealis: women artists from Finland, Sweden, Iceland, and Sápmi, from the 19th century to the present day, exploring the impact of theosophy and spiritualism on modern art. Painting, but also textiles, stained glass, mosaics, and Sami duodji.
