The Parable of Resentment, by Rébecca Chaillon, at the Montreuil Public Theatre

MONTREUIL PUBLIC THEATRE
From November 26 to December 12, 2026

After Vienna and Avignon, Rébecca Chaillon brings her science-fiction fable about a community of fat people resisting the end of the world back home to Montreuil, with the Festival d’Automne.

Once upon a time, in Seine-Saint-Denis, there was a community resisting the end of the world. Rébecca Chaillon assembles a clan of performers who, through survival techniques and synthetic beliefs, invent their mythologies. Unruly stories, brought to life by an incandescent artist.

The title is a play on Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler, one of the first science-fiction novels Chaillon read. The Arabic word "seum," meaning venom, now expresses anger, bitterness, and disappointment. Between Earth, the 93rd district, and Heaven, where gods and billionaires who have gone to colonize space are hiding, the play blends secular rituals, the politics of the body, and humor, “with lightness and a touch of the absurd.”

Seven performers, both professional and non-professional, bring the story to life: Yanis Boulahia, Hassan Gourniz, Loulie Houmed, Camille Léon-Fucien, Living Smile Vidya, Nabila Mekkid, and Julie Teuf. Rébecca Chaillon, a resident of Montreuil and an associate artist of the venue, co-directs the production with Céline Champinot. Created at the Wiener Festwochen in June 2026 and performed at the Cloître des Célestins during the Avignon Festival, the show extends the community of Black women explored in Carte noire nommé désir. Suitable for ages 15 and up: contains scenes of nudity and evokes racist, sexist, and sexual violence. All performances are in a relaxed format, with audio description on December 5th.
